The HUGE number of pantun that make up this database originated from Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, the Southern Philippines and Pattani (Thailand), and were collected by Professor Ding Choo Ming over several decades.
He has kindly agreed to have them housed at ISEAS - Yusof Ishak Institute.
Through this ISEAS database, a wider range of the variety of pantun in the Malay world is now accessible online to the general public.
It is hoped that this will stimulate further research and interest in this exciting cultural form.

Description
Pantun is Malay traditional poetry, handed down orally before they are documented in writing. It is very popular all over the Malay World (comprising Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, southern Philippines and Thailand) and is given different names in different ethnic groups. Composed in simple, beautiful and self-contained verse, pantun is not only easy to remember, thus illiterate farmers, laborers, mothers and others are able to recite many of the popular pantun as entertainment, to grace auspicious occasions and lighten burden of work, but also easy to be carried around, from place to place, from one island to the other in the Malay Archipelago.
The database is searchable using either a single word or a phrase in natural language.
