An archaeological evaluation was conducted in 2009 before the development of the Old Supreme Court and the City Hall national monuments into the National Gallery Singapore. The discovery of a relatively rich archaeological stratigraphy containing colonial and 14th-century period artefacts led to a larger excavation the following year. This site, believed to be a residential area in the 14th century was about 100 meters from the original coastline, which has since been reclaimed. A total of 150 square meters was excavated with an artefact yield of 300 kg.
The sample collection presented here consists of fragmentary special finds that represent life on the liminal zone between land and water of a thriving maritime trading node along the Maritime Silk Road.
