A feature of the festival is the carrying of a kavadi as a form of penance. The kavadi is an arched steel frame with spikes which enter the body and is decorated with colored papers, tinsels, fresh flowers, and fruits. A kavadi-carrying devotee usually has his tongue pierced by a large needle.
