The Wang Gungwu Private Papers

Wang Gungwu (9 October 19301 – ) – Historian, university administrator

Wang Gungwu is a notable historian and he is closely associated with the study of overseas Chinese.

The only child of Chinese classic scholar Wang Fo Wen and Ding Yan, Wang was born in Surabaya, Indonesia in 1930. His father was the headmaster of the Huaqiao High School, the first Chinese high school there. When Wang was a year old, the family moved to Ipoh, Malaya as Wang’s father had found employment as an Assistant Inspector of Chinese schools there.

Additional permissions may be required for certain collections due to conditions stipulated by the depositors/donors.

Where remote viewing is available, you may request up to ten folios each time for a 7-day online consultation period.

Note on consulting the Wang Gungwu Private Papers: The collection is only available for consultation onsite at the ISEAS Library as it is being processed for digitisation. Application to view the collection can be made by submitting the Viewing Request form.
